WEBSTER AVENUE BRIDGE

Webster_BODYWebster Avenue, once a two lane public road, is now a vital pedestrian and bicycle trail on the East Coast Greenway that crosses under Interstate 395 (I-395) in Bangor.  The project consists of replacing the existing three span bridge with a pedestrian/bicycle tunnel.  To minimize impacts to the travelling public, accelerated bridge construction techniques will be used to replace the existing bridge while limiting closure of I-395 to 84 hours.  Using a detail build project delivery method, BSE developed plans, specifications and estimate for the design of a structure to be installed and partially backfilled beneath the existing bridge, while I-395 remained open to traffic above.  BSE worked closely with Contractors to set ambitious, but realistic construction schedule for the bridge closure.  BSE served as the structural engineer of record during preliminary and final design and is now providing engineering support services during construction.
